Consideration Before Buying Smart Lock:Their Defects

Aug. 19, 2021

Almost 25% of U.S. homes now have smart locks. Along with smart thermostats and lights, they have become one of the most popular IoT devices, so popular, in fact, that they have an estimated market value of $3.6 billion.

It's no surprise that so many people are eager to embrace new technology. But while you can find more smart lock options than ever before, there's no guarantee that they'll be both secure and functional.

Whether you're in the market for a smart lock or already have one installed on your front door, here are some of the drawbacks you need to be aware of.

They do fail

The history of locks goes back 4,000 years. Even now, there is still no such thing as a perfect traditional lock. Smart locks have only been around for about a decade and naturally have some technical limitations.

For example, they only work with deadbolts. If you use a different locking mechanism, you will not be able to use them. Smart locks may not hold a latch if the door is left open.

Smart locks can also control the lock on a door, and technical issues can hold you back. If the battery fails, you may find yourself locked out. Or, if your wireless network fails, you may not be able to successfully use the remote feature.

Reliance on your cell phone

Smart locks communicate with your cell phone. If your phone runs out of battery or is lost, you could be locked out of your own home. This is especially true if you don't have a backup option like other authorized devices.

Find a friend or relative who can be an authorized user of your Smart Lock account. If you experience any problems, he or she can open the door for you.

Battery and power

This cannot be repeated. Batteries can and do die. If you do not have access to the backup key (if your system has one), then you will eventually be locked out. The only way out may be to hire a locksmith, who may damage your expensive new smart lock in the process.

Pay attention to the lock's battery life and check to make sure you always have enough power left.

Cost

Smart locks are not cheap, especially when compared to the standard lock and key boxes of the past. You may also need a professional to install the lock and sync it to your network and phone. Malfunctions are also costly to fix.

Price your different options. Of course, you don't want to be cheap with either traditional or smart locks. But there are ways to find excellent value and strong security at the same time.

SMART HANDLE FINGERPRINT DIGITAL SAFE LOCK FOR HOME DOOR

Vulnerable to hacking

This is the biggest weakness of smart locks. While they eliminate the threat of lock picking, hackers can override the system and gain access to your home. Or they can target the lock's weak digital security protocols to access your network. Either way, it poses a serious security risk for you.

As with other IoT devices, you may want to invest in a virtual private network (VPN). Setting up a VPN on your router protects the connection to your smart lock or other device using the latest encryption technology. It ensures that even if a hacker intercepts your virtual key, they can't crack your smart lock by decrypting it.

Smart Lock: Is it worth it?

Smart locks are convenient. Not only do they make it easier to get into your house, but they also bring features such as guest codes, monitoring people coming in and out of your home, and more.

Even with its weaknesses, this technology will only become more prevalent until it becomes the standard in all new homes. But before you take matters into your own hands, be sure to keep in mind the vulnerabilities of smart locks. Only then will you know how to protect your home.

Anyway, it is an unstoppable trend to have a smart fingerprint lock on your door. Don't worry too much about these small probability events. Contact us to buy your safety guard.
